Invesco Internal Career Moves – Olympian steers toward digital distribution
At Invesco, we are dedicated to supporting internal career progressions, as we know we have some of the very best talent around. Having the right conversations with managers, making sure colleagues are focused on developing the right skillsets, and taking ownership of career journeys all play a part in driving our colleague’s careers forward. Movement across departments and teams is fantastic for sharing ideas, developing and helping teams, while growing our careers in this process. We caught up with Alan Campbell who has recently made the move to the EMEA Digital Distribution team from a UK Advisory Sales role.
Q: Alan, tell us a bit about your change in role.
A: I moved into this new role after having been at Invesco for four years. I originally joined as a Sales Account Manager in the UK Advisory team and felt I’d gotten to a point in my career where I needed to think about what’s coming next, what direction do I want my career to continue going in. So having had a series of conversations with my manager, Owen Thomas, who was extremely supportive, a position became available in the EMEA Digital Distribution Team promoting our Model Portfolio Service and helping clients who are looking for solutions.
Q: What does this change in role mean to you?
A: It’s a hugely exciting opportunity. Colleagues have been really patient with areas of the new role where I haven’t had exposure. They are also utilizing my existing experience to understand how I can better support the sales teams and their client relationships. Taking on this role has made me feel more empowered. It is an opportunity to own something, grow, and become a subject matter expert.
Q: What kind of support have you received throughout your career?
A: I’ve had some great role models: Head of UK Distribution, Management Mark Bartley and Head of UK Distribution, Operations Steven Heywood. I have also joined the Mentorium Program when it was first introduced and my mentor was Jillert Blom, Head of Distribution in Benelux, France and in the Nordics. We developed a fantastic relationship both sharing and learning and I gleaned a lot of value from his advice. I joined the Mentorium program again this year but this time as a mentor – it’s a fantastic way to develop relationships, build networks, share different perspectives, and build confidence.
Q: Congratulations on your role progression. What do you do for fun?
A: I’m passionate about rowing. I became Great Britain’s first Olympic medalist in the men’s single scull for 84 years, winning bronze at the London 2012 Games and competed at four Olympic Games finishing in Rio 2016. I was the Great Britain Rowing Team’s leading single sculler for just over 10 years, winning three World Championship medals during that time, which I’m incredibly proud of. Those that know me best, know family is really important to me and will regularly see me around Henley on the weekends, following my eight old daughter from one activity to another.
